Project Overloading

When I started freelancing about two years ago with my partner, we were so hyperactive in looking for gigs and we don't miss opportunities. Saying no to projects was never an option. And it turned out to be satisfying, projects were coming. Sleepless nights was a norm.

Some people uses their looks to pay their bills, some their manual efforts. Writing or programming have their brains to earn. It may not be as difficult as it looks like, but it is. Sitting in front of the computer for 12-16 hours is.

Overtime, I learned few things. Working on projects may be fun and satisfying, but could be tiring.

Tips not to worn out your weapon:

  • Consider projects that can advance your career or knowledge.

  • Know yourself, know your capabilities, strengths and limits.

  • Have a comfortable workplace to lessen stress.

  • Get enough sleep everyday.

  • Eat proper diet.

  • Get some exercise and get rid of those fats.

Someday, we will have to pay back to our bodies on how much we've spent it. Projects will always be there, we just have to make sure that we still have enough magz to dig them.

Found Spaces

After giving up my other Part-time jobs, I begin to experience a newly found space - less responsibilities and more time for myself! Of course, I still have my regular day time job.

This prompted me also to get organized everything inside my room after a friend gave me a funny remarked about my arrangement (good Feng Shui eh?).

Small Space Office

No room to work at home? Think twice! Err thrice? This small office I'm thinking about is big on function.  It helps feed my mouth and pay my bills. LOL.

A small-home-office doesn't have to occupy an entire room to be efficient and useful.  Being an entrepreneur, I find the need to use my rented room (sleeping room) as a small office.  I should address my needs adequately by placing a desk, some file storage, and a computer.  My room is quite spacious where a small office can be set up without sacrificing my need to sleep and for other purposes.  Besides, meeting a client for presentation and signing of contracts can be done at a Coffee Shop.

Thanks to the personal computer, which holds a huge amount of information in compact electronic storage, I can create a powerful empire with as little as my room.  All I have to do is customize my working area to fit the available space.

Where's the office in this room?

One corner in my room is a good candidate for conversion to compact small-office space.  I can use the space above my bed for shelves that hold supplies and reference materials.  Separate the working area from my sleeping area.  Last night, my office table and a filing cabinit (W: 2 feet and H: 5.10 feet)  was delivered by a local furniture store.  I was able to ask for a good discount. Office table P3k instead of P3, 990 and filing cabinet P1, 800 instead of P2, 300. And they are all brand new! Wetwew.

As I am writing this blog, I can see clearly the color combination and the look and feel of my room being organized - next phase please! LOL.

If space for office equipment and storage is limited, you might have to prioritize your needs.  Use the "circle of reach" rule: Place all materials and equipment that are vital to your work needs within easy reach of your office chair.  Then find nearby location for other materials and equipment you need less often - e.g bed or floor.

This blog of mine will serve as a reminder whenever I have enough budget for the next phase of my room.

- My laptop computer is powerful.  It only occupies a fraction of the desk space.  It can be moved easily if I need desk space for other tasks and can be folded up and stored in a drawer or cabinet.

- Hid the Internet modem or DSL modem underneath the table or use an access point.

- Arrange the printer or fax machine.  I bought a second hand printer (slightly used) for P700 only.

- Use a wall-mounted bulletin board to keep important messages, business cards, or correspondence in sight.  You can also buy a whiteboard for important reminders and calendar of activites.

- Choose the best color combination.  Apply the color philosophy.

- Make more money! Who doesn't?

(Don't bother to ask this guy if he ever enjoys his day-offs)

Free Online Meeting Service for Collaboration and Live Conferencing

After attending another physical meeting at IT Park (Cebu City), I got a text message from my development team asking me to be online as soon as possible when I get home.  Checked my time and whoa! It's already past 8PM.

God bless the Internet! So I teleported back to my room...LOL.

Waiting for the next day is too late to decide something, especially if you're drafting a contract for another big project.

Typing your instructions in plain text is also not enough, you need visuals to convey your message.  Now, look no further!

Another geek site for collaboration and live conferencing! Go and visit the site at www.vyew.com . See for yourself.

And yes, you can make comments over your presentation so it's pretty handy while you are doing your talk.

Coffee Please.

[Sit back and Relax] *gulp*
